I change the oil personally in some of my cars (sort of enjoy it, and the dealer charges over $300 on one of them just for an oil/filter change). I've always had the bias that it was better to drain from the bottom using the plug than to use an extractor, but it seems pretty clear to me that that thinking should change, at least with my new Benz.

By how much oil comes out. You'll never get as much oil out of a typical engine with an extractor as you would by draining via drain plug, though. That said, I've heard that some OEMs use these at the dealership. Don't remember which manufacturer (not Toyota), and don't have any idea if it's true. Dan

Note that the benefit of removing the drain plug and draining the oil is that you get out almost all of the old oil. When using an oil extraction pump a little bit of old oil will remain. If there are any small amounts of metal debris or particular matter in the old oil, it shouldn't be a problem as the oil filter will trap them. An oil extractor can even remove more oil than through the drain plug in cases where the drain is above the bottom of the oil pan.
