Crude Oil Pretreatment: Desalting. Desalting is the first separation process that takes place at the front end of a petroleum refinery (i.e., prior to atmospheric distillation; Figure 1.5). Its primary objective is to prevent corrosion and fouling of downstream lines and equipment by reducing the oil’s salt content significantly. During the life oil wells, production process usually passes three stages. Primary recovery uses the natural source of energy. Pumps and gas lifting are involved in the primary recovery. The main purpose of secondary recovery process is to maintain the reservoir pressure by either a natural gas flooding or water flooding. However, by applying the tertiary recovery (commonly called Enhanced Oil Recovery, EOR), production could reach 40 to 60% of oil in the reservoir. EOR can generally be divided into two methods; non- thermal and thermal methods. The non-thermal methods include chemical flood, and gas flood. This allows hydrocarbons such as crude oil and natural gas to flow from the rock formation back to the wellbore and then to the surface. Using well completion and production data from DrillingInfo and IHS Global Insight, EIA created a profile of oil production in the United States. On average, U.S. refineries produce, from a 42-gallon barrel of crude oil, about 19 to 20 gallons of motor gasoline, 11 to 12 gallons of distillate fuel, most of which is sold as diesel fuel, and 4 gallons of jet fuel. More than a dozen other petroleum products are also produced in refineries. The gas train consists of several stages, each taking gas from a suitable pressure level in the production separator's gas outlet, and from the previous stage. A typical stage is shown on the right. Incoming gas (on the right) is first cooled in a heat exchanger.
